Results of the Contest to Predict Nobel Prize Winners in Economics

This year, three economists received the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel: Ben Bernanke, Douglas Diamond and Philip Dybvig. For participants of the prediction contest, the jury's choice turned out to be quite unexpected—only six people guessed one of the three Nobel laureates.

Results of the Contest to Predict Nobel Prize Winners in Economics

Unlike last year, none of the contestants guessed all three (or at least two of the three) winners. Six correctly indicated one Nobel laureate (Bernanke and Diamond received three votes each), while half of those who guessed noted only the ‘correct’ candidate alongside economists who did not receive the prize. Therefore, the most accurate forecasts were those in which the bet was placed on one candidate and no one else. The most accurate predictors were Tatul Hayrapetyan (2nd year student of the Master of Arts in Economics programme at NES), Marc Ovadia (faculty member of the University of Illinois and researcher) and Diego Restrepo-Tobón (Associate Professor of Finance at the School of Economics and Finance at EAFIT University, Colombia and Head of the Finance Department). The winners will receive a signed copy of the Russian-language book "Russian Universities: How The System works" by the academic supervisor of HSE University Yaroslav Kuzminov and the director of Center for Institutional Studies, distinguished professor of HSE University Maria Yudkevich or book Higher Education In Russia by the same authors in English, which has just been released by Johns Hopkins University Press.

This year, 140 people from HSE University, Moscow State University, St Petersburg State University, RANEPA, Financial University, NES, Sber, Uber, Stanford, Oxford, the University of Chicago and other educational institutions and companies from Russia, USA, the United Kingdom, Italy, Israel, India, Estonia, Moldova, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Vietnam and other countries took part in the competition-2022.

Daron Acemoglu remained the most popular nominee for the second year (63 votes), followed by James Robinson (39 votes), Samuel Bowles and Simon Johnson (20 votes each).

The Nobel Prize Winners' prediction contest is named after NES Professor Andrey Bremsen, a talented populariser of economic sciences and organiser of intellectual competitions.
