Foresight: Methods and Practices

Foresight: Methods and Practices

The methods composition was selected according to the bibliometric analysis results of publications on this topic, as well as relying on extensive practice of foresight studies, which has been conducted for more than 20 years by the HSE ISSEK Foresight Centre’s experts, including with other HSE departments, coordinating this activity within framework of ‘National Centre of Science, Technology and Socio-Economic Foresight’ (one of HSE five strategic projects under Priority 2030 programme).

The authors present in detail foresight methods evolution, which is moving towards strengthening its evidence base (in particular, thanks to development of tools for analyzing big data) and increasing integration of qualitative and quantitative approaches to research. Each method is described using unified framework, including its definition, implementation stages, required resources, advantages and limitations, and case studies demonstrating its potential application. This framework allows for comparison of methods based on individual parameters and optimal set selection for use in specific projects.

The book can be useful for managers optimizing innovation management tools and for specialists using foresight methodology to develop strategies for companies, economic sectors, cities, and regions. As recent discussion "Technologies for Managing the Future" (April 1, 2026, HSE University) demonstrated, the publication is receiving a warm response from business community. The report may also be of interest to researchers, undergraduates, and graduate students working on long-term forecasting.
